On July 14 2003, Robert Novak, a Right-Wing pundit and reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times publicly "outs" Valerie Plame as a CIA operative. His article which is published to the general public, says:

Wilson never worked for the CIA, but his wife, Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction. Two senior administration officials told me Wilson's wife suggested sending him to Niger to investigate the Italian report. The CIA says its counter-proliferation officials selected Wilson and asked his wife to contact him. "I will not answer any question about my wife," Wilson told me."Plame Leak timeline

The CIA preliminary investigation

After weeks of debate about the legality of the leak, on July 30th 2003 the CIA files a "crime report" with the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), suggesting the leak of Wilson's wife's name and covert status might entail criminal acts Plame Leak timeline

On December 30, 2003 Attorney General Ashcroft recuses himself from the leak investigation. James Comey, Deputy Attorney General, appoints Patrick Fitzgerald, a U.S. Attorney, as "special" counsel.
