Peter Welch

Peter Welch is a Democratic lawyer from Vermont. He successfully ran for Congress in the At-large seat that was vacated by Bernie Sanders, see Vermont U.S. House election, 2006.
Welch served in the state senate from 1981 to 1988. He ran unsucessfully for the U.S. House in 1988, and for Governor in 1990. In 2001, he was appointed to fill an empty state senate seat, and he was elected in his own right in 2002. He is President Pro Tem of the Vermont State Senate.
Welch was recently widowed. He was married to the late Joan Smith, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont. He has five grown children.
