Pearl Harbor. Hawaii, strategically located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is vitally important to the defense system of the United States. Pearl Harbor located on the island of Oahu, contains a vast shipyard, the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, for the repair and overhaul of U.S. fleet units. Pearl Harbor is also the home port for many U.S. naval ships. It serves as a training base for submarine and antisubmarine warfare forces.
On December 7, 1941, a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor by the Japanese that precipitated the entry of the United States into World War II. This devastating attack took more than 2,000 lives. The battleship USS Arizona was sunk and 1,177 American crewmen were entombed within its confines. The USS Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri are situated at the harbor.
Ford Island is located in Pearl Harbor and is connected to the main island by the Admiral Clarey Bridge. Ford Island is a National Historic Landmark.
The Navy intends to develop and execute a phased development program for Ford Island to improve the quality of life for Sailors and their families as well as meeting facility requirements. The Ford Island Development project is a multi-million dollar public/private development made possible through special federal legislation adopted by Congress in 1999.
