Paul Hellyer

From dKosopedia

Paul Hellyer, or the Hon. Paul Theodore Hellyer, was a Liberal Party and later as an independent and a Progressive Conservative [sic] Member of Parliament, served as Minister of Defence from 1963 to 1967 under Prime Minister Lester Pearson and was a Deputy Prime Minister under Pierre Trudeau.

Hellyer was born on August 6, 1923 in Waterford, Ontario. He now lives in Toronto, and has three children and five grandchildren.

First elected to Parliament in 1949, he was defeated in his bid for reelection in 1974. While Minister of Defence Hellyer oversaw the union of Canadia's three military services into the Canadian Forces. Hellyer ran unsuccessfully against Trudeau in 1968 for the leadership of the Liberal Party. On April 24, 1969 he resigned as Transport Minister citing his frustration with Ottawa's inaction on such issues as urban development and pollution. Having swung far to the ideological right he ran unsucessfully for the leadership of the Progressive Conservatives in 1976. He rejoined the Liberal Party in 1982 and once again lost his bid for re-election to Parliament. In 1997 Hellyer helped to organize the Canadian Action Party. He lost bids for election to Parliament in 1997 and 2000.

In addition to the advocacy of Canadian sovereignty, he has strongly opposed the weaponization of space.

Quotes

On September 25, 2005 Hellyer suprised the audience at the University of Toronto when he stated that "UFOs are as real as airplanes that fly over your head." He also stated that the second Bush administration had decided to build a forward base on the Moon as a way to observe UFO activity. Discussion of UFOs is usually associated in the popular culture with cranks and crackpots.

On February 28, 2007 Hellyer told the Ottawa Citizen that "I would like to see what (alien) technology there might be that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuels within a generation...that could be a way to save our planet...We need to persuade governments to come clean on what they know. Some of us suspect they know quite a lot, and it might be enough to save our planet if applied quickly enough."
