Party of Democratic Socialism

The Party of Democratic Socialism (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus, or PDS) is the newest Bundestag party, represented there since 1990. It arose from the former Socialist Unity Party (SED), the Communist state party of the former German Democratic Republic. PDS membership is predominantly eastern German, although the party is trying to establish a greater western presence.

In the 2002 federal elections, the PDS won 2 seats in the Bundestag.
