A central American republic. After the overthrow by progressive forces of the dictator Somoza, Nicaragua was perceived by the US as a political threat. Its 'Sandinista' government made numerous reforms in the areas of health, social welfare, education and land distribution. The US employed diplomatic, political, economic and military pressure, resulting in the defeat of the government in the elections of November 1990.
