Nathan Deal

John Nathan Deal is the Republican U.S. Representative from the 10th District of Georgia (map), (before 2003 it was the 9th District). He was first elected in 1993. The 10th District runs along the border with Tennessee and North Carolina, and extends into part of the Atlanta suburbs.
Nathan Deal was born in Millen, Georgia on August 25, 1942, attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and served in the United States Army. He later worked as a lawyer, assistant district attorney, judge and member of the Georgia Senate from 1981-93, serving as president pro tem in his last term. Deal served his first congressional term and the first four months of his second term as a Democrat. However, he turned coat in April 1995 term after whining that he felt "uncomfortable" as the most conservative Democrat in the Georgia delegation. He was reelected as a Republican in 1996, the first time his district had elected a Republican since Reconstruction.

Party Turncoat
Nathan Deal's legislative voting record had been relatively moderate in his first term, but goose-stepped right-ward after his party switch. Originally pro-choice on abortion, he altered his stance to pro-life. His final conversion to conservative Republicanism occurred in 1998 when he voted for all four articles of impeachment against Bill Clinton. He has been unopposed for reelection since 1998. Deal's betrayal meant that no white Democrat represented the people of Georgia in the U.S. House until the election of Jim Marshall in 2002.
Xenophobia
There is votes from the ignorant in making populist zero-sum anti-Hispanic appeals among Anglo-Saxon white and black Georgians. In a November 29, 2005 radio interview with Martha Zoller on WDUN Deal says endorsed a proposal requiring more documentation for applications for Medicaid benefits from the Department of Family and Children's Services (DFACS) when applying for Medicaid benefits. "They ask you are you a citizen, and you say 'yes' or 'si' or whatever word you want to use from your language," he said, pandering to ethnic hatred. "They don't require any documentation to prove that." What better expression of the heartlessness and shortsightedness of conservative Republicanism than denying necessary medical benefits to children in an effort to punish their parents and convincing working class Georgians that receiving their own medical benefits depend on denying benefits to even poorer members of the working class? Class "divide and rule" hate mongering like that is an old tradition in Georgia.
Eat Mo' Chickin'
Gainesville, Georgia, whose boosters present as the "Poultry Capital of the World," is part of the 10th District. In response to public concerns about the possible outbreak of deadly Avian Influenza the local poultristas persuaded Nathan Deal to call a "meeting" to send a message to the public that U.S. poultry is safe. "Eat more of it," said the Republican Representative in his service to agri-business as cheap shill.
