Muhammad Abacha

Mohammed Abacha is the eldest surviving son of Nigeria's former military dictator, the late Gen. Sani Abacha and is believed to be the current head of the Abacha family. He was arrested and charged with the murder and attempted murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola (wife of MKO Abiola) and Mr. Ibru (Head of Guardian Newspaper - an opposition newspaper) respectively.

Mohammed Abacha was released by President Olusegun Obasanjo after an agreement was reached between the government and the Abacha family that they would hand over funds which had been stolen from the National Treasury with the exception of $100 Million in bonds. As soon as Mohammed Abacha stepped out of jail, he denied having agreed to such a deal and has not handed over any money since then. On August 10, 2005 he appealed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in Abuja to overturn a decision of the lower Court of Appeal, which refused to "unfreeze" approximately $800 million in U.S. currency in bank accounts in Britain, Jersey, Liechtenstein, Luxenbourg and Switzerland. The monies are believed to have been deposited there by his father before his death in the name of Muhammad Abacha and 19 corporate entities.

Muhammad Abacha's younger brother is currently being held for money laudering in Europe.
