Mike Retzger became the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania in July 2005. His qualifications for the position of representing the interests of the United States in one of the poorest countries on the planet are:
- Was the Chair of Retzer Resources Inc. whose holdings include several McDonald's restaurants.
- Was the Chair of the Republican Party of Mississippi in 1978-1982 and 1996-2001, Coordinator of the Bush 2000 election campaign in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee, and Treasurer of the Republican National Committee.
In 2003 Tanzania had a per capita Gross National Income of only $300 a year.
