Mike Gravel(born 1930) is a former two-term U.S. Senator who represented the state of Alaska from 1969-1981. He was best known in the Senate for his opposition to the draft and Vietnam War, led a filibuster against the renewal of Selective Service, and read the Pentagon Papers into the Senate record making sure that they would remain public. Since leaving the Senate he has worked to promote a Constitutional amendment to allow for ballot initiatives and referendums at the federal level, which he calls the National Initiative for Democracy.
He was a candidate for President of the United States in the 2008 Democratic Primaries, but withdrew after the Iowa caucus. He has been out of political office since 1981 and is making support for national initiatives the central issue of his campaign, and for these reasons is considered a very long-shot candidate.
