Melvin Watt (D) represents North Carolina's 12th district in the U.S. House. He was first elected to Congress in 1992.
Watt was born in Steele Creek, N.C., on August 26, 1945. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1967 and received a J.D. from Yale University School of Law in 1970. He was a member of the North Carolina state senate from 1985-1986.
Watt is married to Eulada Paysour Watt, an educator, and they have two sons. Mel is a member of the Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church and a life member of the NAACP.
