From dKosopedia

Megachurch is the name given to fundamentalist Christian protestant churches with thousands of members. The 2000 member mark appears to be threshold at which sheer size begins to attract new members. Large congregations create social vortices drawing new members. Although they appear all over the United States and even in Australia, some three-fourths are in American Southeast or Bible Belt.

Megachurches make available to socially conservative Republican politicans enormous blocs of bovine voters vulnerable to campaign appeals tapping the social and persoanl anxieties of the audience.
