Overview
Luxembourg is a small country, both by population (about 438,000 people) and land area (998 square miles), in Western Europe. It was part of the Benelux customs union, which was formed in 1921 (originally including only Belgium and Luxembourg) and served as a vital core for the early European Union of which it is a founding member. Both French and German, as well as the local languag, Luxembourgian are used widely there. Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of the Grand Duke. Until the early 1970s, its economy was dominated by the steel industry (over 25% of GNP in 1970 and a greater percentage before then). International banking is one of its main industries (over 50% of GNP), offering tax and privacy protections similar to those sometimes associated in the past with Switzerland.
