- Results: A runoff election will be held on December 9th to chose between Jefferson and Carter. Shepherd endorsed Jefferson, while Lavigne and Troy Carter endorsed Karen Carter. Jefferson won the runoff by 57-43%.
- Outlook: On May 17, 2006, the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into corruption charges against Jefferson, concurrent with a similar investigation of Ohio Republican Robert W. Ney. On May 20, 2006, the FBI executed a search warrrant on Jeffferson's Congressional office, setting off a major separation of powers quarrel.
- Jefferson received a nearly 80% majority in the 2004 election. With the depopulation of New Orleans following Hurrican Katrina and his current ethical and legal woes, it is just possible he will be defeated.
- The Louisiana State Democratic Party endorsed State Rep. Karen Carter.
