From dKosopedia

Laura Thielen, will assume the interim position of Director of the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources, (DLNR) on July 30, 2007. Thielen's appointment by Governor Linda Lingle is subject to confirmation by the Hawaii State Senate when it reconvenes in January 2008. Thielen replaces interim director Allan Smith, who the Governor appointed on May 1, 2007, when Peter Young, the previous DLNR Director, was not reconfirmed by the Senate.

Presently, Thielen is the executive director of the Hawaii State Office of Planning.

In November 2002, Thielen was elected to serve on the Hawaii State Board of Education to represent the Windward O‘ahu district. Theien, an outspoken member of the Board of Education, resigned her board post in April 2005 to accept the appointment of director of the Hawaii State Office of Planning. She has supported Lingle's plans for school board decentralization in the face of opposition by a majority of board members.

Thielen served on the Kailua Neighborhood Board from 1994 to 1996.

Thielen also practiced law with the firms of Gerson Grekin Wynhoff & Thielen in Honolulu, and Squire Sanders & Dempsey in Cleveland, Ohio. Her forte was environmental and land use issues.

Thielen is a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Law and the University of Colorado, Boulder. She also earned a master’s in public policy from the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute.

Laura Thielen is the daughter of GOP Rep. Cynthia Thielen.
