The Korean War was fought from 1950-1953 between South Korea formed in the U.S. occupation zone of Korea, and North Korea formed in the Russian occupation zone of Korea. Russia and the U.S. had taken power from Japan which had invaded and colonized Korea prior to World War II, but surrendered its colonies upon losing the war. A division of the Korean pennisula was agreed upon, but no true peace treaty was reached. The United States has kept more than a division of troops in South Korea ever since to protect against a possible North Korean invasion of the South, similar to the actions that lead to the original Korean War.
