Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri

Khurshid Kasuri or Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri or Mian Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri is the current Foreign Minister of Pakistan. The regime in which he serves as chief diplomat is a miltiary dictatorship.

Political Career

In 1977, Khurshid Kasuri was elected to the National Assembly. In 1990, he was appointed secretary-general of the People's Democratic Alliance, of which the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) was a constituent. In 1993, he left Tehrik-e-Istiqlal and joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N). He was elected to the National Assembly in 1997 from Kasur and was made the Chairman of the Committee on Information and Media Development. He was also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

As an apparent political moderate, Kasuri has assiduously cultivated Pakistan's minorities. Members of Pakistan's Shi'a Islamic minority, who are 10% of the national population, have been the subject of terrorist atatcks by Sunni Islamists.

Background

Born in 1941, Khurshi Kasuri is typical of Pakistani political elites. English educated, he comes from one of Pakistan's provincial political dynasties. His grandfather was Maulana Abdul Qadir Kasuri, a Kashmiri leader of the Indian National Congress and his father Mahmud Ali Kasuri was in the Indian National Congress until 1940. Throughout his academic career he had an excellent record, which culminated in his topping in the B.A. (Hons) Examination of the Punjab University in 1961. At the Government College Lahore, he was awarded many academic prizes and Rolls of Honour. Khurshid Kasuri did his Tripos from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University and then Master's in Political Science and Public Administration from Oxford University, besides a few courses at the Universities of Paris and Nice, France. He was called to the Bar from Gray’s Inn, London.
