Kansas, the 'sunflower state', became the 39th state on Jan. 29, 1861. Topeka is the capital of Kansas, while its largest city is Wichita.

At the time of settlement Kansas could be seen in some ways as a bastion of liberal ideals.

Many of the settlers came from New England.

Many were against slavery.

And many didn't mind the idea of women working.

Then something changed.

Kansas has not supported a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. In 2004, George W. Bush won the state's 6 electoral votes by a margin of 25 percentage points with 62% of the vote. The only two counties to support Democrat John Kerry were those containing the city of Kansas City and the college town of Lawrence.

In 1999, the Kansas State Board of Education made that infamous decision to eliminate the theory of evolution from the state teaching standards, a decision later reversed. On November 8, 2005, a The Kansas State Board of Education, at the urging of intelligent design advocates, voted to add criticisms of evolution to the state science standards.

While other states outside the South are raising their state minimum wages above the Federal minimum wage of $5,15 an hour, Kansas for some reason continues to set a state minimum wage lower than the Federal minimum. See U.S. Dept. of Labor Map

It is possible that in the near future Kansas will become the wind turbine capital of the world [1] and solar panels will adorne every roof in the state.

But right now that process is just starting.
