Joseph D. Courtney (D) defeated then-incumbent Republican Robert R. Simmons in an extraordinarily tight race for the 2nd Congressional district of Connecticut, to enter the 110th Congress (See Connecticut U.S. House election, 2006; fewer than 200 votes separated the candidates).

He is a lawyer from Connecticut. Joe has had a long political career. He represented the citizens of Vernon in the 56th House District in the Connecticut General Assembly for four consecutive terms -- from 1987 to 1994. In 1998, Courtney made a Democratic bid for Lieutenant Governor, and for Second District Congressman in 2002. Before entering Congress, he was the Town Attorney for the Town of Vernon, Connecticut.

Courtney is a 1975 graduate of Tufts University in Boston. He earned a law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1978.
