John DeSoto

From dKosopedia

John DeSoto (Born July 21, 1947), was elected in 1986 to the Honolulu City Council. He served the maximum four four-year terms representing District IX, which includes Makaha, Waianae, Maili, Nanakuli, Honokai Hale, Makakilo, Ewa, Ewa Beach, Barbers Point, Kunia and a portion of Waipahu.

DeSoto was a two-time national motocross champion in 1971 and 1972 and the Hawaii state motocross champion from 1965 through 1967. Desoto is the world record holder in the 40 and older class of the 24-Hour Enduro Race. He was inducted into the American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame in 1999.

DeSoto's competitive motocross career lasted until 1975, when he moved back to Hawaii and worked in construction and at an oil refinery for over a decade. But he wanted to help those who, in his mind, mattered most -- kids. So he ran for the city council, and was elected in 1986. [1]

After retirement DeSoto formed a canoe club to help wayward kids.
