Jerry Sanders

From dKosopedia

Jerry Sanders, a member of the Republican Party, won the November 2005 special runoff election for Mayor of the city of San Diego against Donna Frye. The mayoral election is non-partisan. Sanders becomes the 34th Mayor of San Diego and also becomes San Diego's first "strong" mayor. Frye's advocacy for a sales tax increase probably doomed her chances in San Diego, well-known for it's being anti-tax. Jerry Sanders won 54.04% of San Diego's vote to Donna Frye's 45.96%.

Sanders served as Chief of Police of the City of San Diego from 1993 until 1999, capping a 26-year career with the department.

In 1999, Sanders became president and CEO of the United Way of San Diego County. In addition, he served as the United Way Community Campaign Chair in 2002.

In 2002, Sanders was appointed to the board of the American Red Cross San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapters after the local CEO was fired by the national headquarters in the aftermath of controversy concerning the Alpine Fire.

Sanders and his wife Rana Sampson, live in Kensington. He has two daughters, Lisa and Jamie.
