Jackie Speier is a member of the U.S. House, where she represents California's 12th district. She was elected in a special election to fill the seat of the deceased Rep. Tom Lantos (D).
Speier has been a county supervisor, state assemblywoman and state senator, and in 2006 she ran unsuccessfully for Lt. Gov. Speier began in politics as an aide to former Rep. Leo Ryan, who was murdered at the Jim Jones compound in Guyana in 1978.
