Biography
Kingston is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and Gridiron Secret Society. He is married with four children. He was in the insurance business and served in the Georgia General Assembly before being elected to Congress.
Mister Hyperbole
The rather prissy Kingston likes to posture as a tough talking politician. For example he has expressed concern about "evil Saddam-loving terrorists". He has also said that, "John Kerry is Ted Kennedy after the South Beach diet". Most amusingly, during the November 19, 2005 debate about the Republican War in Iraq on the floor of the House of Representatives, Kingston twice claimed that, "I represent the Third Infantry Division." He seemed unaware that this expression of militarism runs counter to his responsibility to represent the entire 1st Congressional District of Georgia or, alternatively, the entire American people. During that same November 19, 2005 debate, Kingston also mistakenly claimed that the proposal being debated was a "Democratic proposal" when in reality it was a Republican proposal. Rather embarrassingly, Kingston's own Website Biography proclaims him to be "one of the strongest communicators in Congress."
Special Pleading
In an early December 2005 meeting between Jack Kingston and Donald Rumsfeld, they were seen walking briskly down the corridor of a House of Representatives office building on their way to Rumsfeld's waiting black Lincoln Navigator when they were overheard by a reporter talking about whether some Democratic critics of the war had gone to see what was happening in Iraq, as Kingston just had. "I wanted to ask, 'Has he been there?'" Kingston commented to Rumsfeld, later saying it was a reference to Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). "Good question," Rumsfeld is said to have replied. McCarthyism
Like many other right-wing Republican members of the U.S. House, Kingston would like to intimdate informed critics. That is the motivation for introducing so-called "Academic Bill of Rights" legislation, an McCarthyite effort to mobilize conservative students against faculty members critical of government policies. So far the effort has fizzled. Source: Eric Swedlund. "Professor Bias Up for Debate at UA." Arizona Daily Star. October 30, 2005.
Lapel Pins
- Kingston went on MSNBC to criticize Barack Obama for not wearing an American flag lapel pin. Unfortunately for Kingston, he wasn't wearing one himself. (Source: Talking Points Memo, Feb 28, 2008.)
Quotes
- On the prospect that the 110th Congress would have a five day workweek: "Keeping us up here eats away at families. Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families -- that's what this says."
- "The Democrats' honeymoon is fixing to end. It's going to explode like an IED."
2007 outrage
In 2007 Kingston Introduces Resolution ‘Commending’ Rush Limbaugh for slandering servicemen and veterans who don't agree with the Iraq war.[1]
