Immigration

From dKosopedia

Wikipedia: Immigration is the movement of human population, other than temporary movements such as those of casual visitors or travellers, across national borders. Therefore, immigration is only as old as the nation state. Immigration policies regulate the movement of people into and out of a country.

When talking about immigration policies, it is helpful to be aware of two dichotomies: temporary vs permanent; documented vs undocumented. The following matrix may help:

  temporary migrants permanent migrants
documented
migrants
temporary workers; students; other nonimmigrants immigrants (aka LPRs)
undocumented
migrants
asylum seekers refugees; "illegal immigrants"
