Hawai'i County is a county located within the state of Hawaii, consisting of the island of Hawai'i. The popular name of the island is the 'Big Island'. The county seat is Hilo. The other majot cities or towns are Kailua-Kona and Kamuela. The map above shows the Hawaii County Council districts.

Government

Hawai'i County has a mayor-council form of municipal government. Executive authority is vested in the Mayor, elected by the voters on a non-partisan basis to a four-year term. Legislative authority is vested in the nine-member County Council, each of whose members represent a district. Members of the County Council are elected on a non-partisan basis to two-year terms.



Geography

Land area 4,028 square miles. The island consists of five volcanoes: Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Kilauea, Hualalai and Kohala. Mauna Loa and Kilauea are active volcanoes, while Hualalai is an active volcano, it last erupted in 1800 and 1801.
