Private, coeducational college and research institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first college established in the United States, it is a member of the prestigious Ivy League and is considered by many to be one of the finest institutions of learning in the world.
Founded in 1636 by the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it was originally intended to train select members of the new colony for the clergy. The institution is run by the President and Fellows of Harvard College, the oldest corporation in the United States. Harvard holds the world's largest university library collection. Harvard not only became a place to make big bonuses, it was also where you could make a name for yourself and launching your own private equity firm or hedge fund with Harvard's backing
In addition to Harvard College, the undergraduate division, the University includes a Medical School, a School of Law, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, a School of Divinity, a Business School, a School of Dental Medicine, an Education School, a School of Design, and a School of Public Health, as well as many other graduate programs under Graduate School of Arts and Sciences . Harvard in recent years absorbed Radcliffe College for women. Harvard now admits as many women as men to its undergraduate degree program. However, Harvard has made little progress in its efforts to recruit and retain female and minority faculty.
Former Clinton Administration Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers is Harvard's current President.
