From dKosopedia
There have been three major conflicts in the late 20th century and early 21st century called Gulf War, all of which refer to conflicts in the Persian Gulf region:
- Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) (sometmes called the First Gulf War). This was a war between Iran and Iraq.
- Persian Gulf War (1990-1991) (aka First Gulf War, though when used in conjunction with the alternate name of the Iran-Iraq war it is sometimes called the Second Gulf War). This was a war between Iraq and a coalition of nations led by the United States in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. This conflict is referred to by the Armed Forces as Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
- the 2003 Invasion of Iraq (2003-present) (aka 2003 Iraq War, Second Gulf War, though when used in conjunction with the alternate name of the Iran-Iraq war it is sometimes called the Third Gulf War). This was a war between Iraq and a "coalition of the willing" led by the United States, which resulted in the removal from power of the government of Saddam Hussein. This conflict is referred to by the Armed Forces as Operation Iraqi Freedom.
