Grassroot Institute of Hawaii

From dKosopedia

The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii (GRIH), a conservative think tank founded by Richard 'Dick' Rowland and is supported by the State Policy Network, the Heritage Foundation and other conservative groups. Although Malia Zimmerman claims she co-founded it that is not the case according to Mr. Rowland.

Accoring to their website:

"The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii is a non-profit [IRS 501c3], non-partisan,
public policy think tank formed in 2001 by Hawaii residents who realized the
need for detailed study, analysis, investigation and reporting on the impact
on the individual citizen by government and its procedures and departments
in Hawaii. When appropriate, study results and recommendations will be
      advanced."

GRIH is closely partnered with Small Business Hawaii, (SBH), and the Hawaii Reporter an online conservative newspaper co-founded by Malia Zimmerman. SBH's President and Executive Director is Hawai'i Republican State Senator Sam Slom.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser article on 8-14-05, "Once known primarily for its opposition to tax increases and government intrusion on individual liberties, the five-year-old Grassroot Institute of Hawaii this year suddenly thrust itself to the forefront of opposition to the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, known as the Akaka Bill for lead sponsor U.S. Sen. Dan Akaka, D-Hawai'i."

The Advertiser article goes on to state, "The institute's underlying argument is that the bill is race-based, and therefore unconstitutional. Proponents of the bill argue instead that the United States has a "special political responsibility" to Hawaiians because of the prior relationship between what were two countries."

The President and board member of the Grassroot Institute is Jamie Story, a Texas beauty Queen and former Miss America top 10 finalist who took over in the Spring of 2008. Richard Rowland is the Founder, Chairman of the Board and President Emeritus[1]. Malia Zimmerman, President and Editor of the Hawaii Reporter, is the Secretary and a Board Member with the Institute. Cliff Slater, founder of Maui Divers [2] and nemisis of Honolulu's rail project [3], is a board member and Treasurer. Pearl Hahn, a Georgetown grad is a 'Policy Analyst' with the Institute. [4]
