Short for Get Out The Vote; refers to efforts made to motivate friendly voters to go to the polls.

GOTV tactics primarily consist of a combination of:

• Raising voter awareness
• Voter registration
• Motivating voters to act

GOTV tactics include:

• Canvassing
• Phone banking
• Television and radio commercials
• Direct-mail
• Participation in public debate (such as letters to the editor)
• Rallies
• Computer games

GOTV is often co-ordinated directly by political campaigns, although motivated third parties can operate independently to help elect candidates favorable to their causes. This must be done carefully in order to avoid violating campaign finance laws.
