George Moscone

From dKosopedia

George Moscone (1929 - 1978) Mayor of San Francisco from 1976 to his assassination in 1978.

Born in San Francisco, California. Attended University of the Pacific and Hastings College of the Law.

Ran unsuccessfully in the early 1960s as a Democrat for the California State Legislature eventually winning a seat in the State Senate. He was a close ally of many of California's leading progressives, including Governor Jerry Brown and Speaker Willie Brown.

Elected mayor in 1976. In 1977 Moscone was supported by the election of several new members of the city Board of Supervisors. The shift in 1977 to a ward based rather than city-wide election of City Supervisors had facilitated the election of the city's first elected Asian American supervisor, Gordon Lau, as well as openly gay, Harvey Milk.

On Monday, November 27, 1978 Moscone was shot and killed by former Supervisor Dan White who then killed Harvey Milk as well.

Head of the Board of Supervisors, Dianne Feinstein became the acting Mayor.
