George Deukmejian

Deukmejian, George

Former Republican Governor of California, 1983-1991, known for his hard-line crime-reduction stance.

Born to Armenian immigrants in New York City. Graduated from Siena College, and then received a law degree from St. John's University. Moved to California, where he practiced law and was eventually elected to the State Legislature. Later, won an election to become Attorney General, solidifying his tough-on-crime reputation. Was said to be a protege of Ronald Reagan. Won the governorship in 1982,and was re-elected in 1986, both times defeating Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley. Retired from politics in 1991.
