George Allen

From dKosopedia

George "Macaca" Allen was the incumbent Republican U.S. Senator from Virginia and former Governor who narrowly lost his 2006 Senate re-election bid to James Webb.

His 2006 campaign was undermined by a series of self-inflicted wounds in the form of racist remarks so stupid they suggest he may not even be aware of his racism. A staunch member of the Christian Right, Allen appeared almost contrite on September 24, 2006 when confessing that his mother, Henriette "Etty" Allen, was of Jewish ancestry but stressing that she was "raised as a Christian."

Allen's racial anxieties aren't limited to Jews. On August 10, 2006 Allen derided S.R. Sidarth, an Indian-American volunteer for his Democratic opponent by video recording Allen in the following langauge:

"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great." Saying that his Democratic opponent was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen said, "Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia."

Macaca, means both "monkey" and is also a racial slur against dark skinned people in some North African countries (guess where Allen's mom grew up?). See the Video.

With no where else to turn, Allen has asked for help from a political figure almost as repugnant as himself. U.S. President George W. Bush was invited to Richmond on October 19, 2006 to help the Allen campaign raise funds from Republican "dead-enders." The Allen camp wants to raise as much as $500,000 from a "Twilight Reception" at the Science Museum of Virginia. Source: Tyler Whitley. Poll Numbers

An October 26-29, 2006 telephone survey conducted for CNN by Opinion Research Corp. among 597 registered Virginia likely voters showed Webb pulling ahead of Allen. 50% of respondents favored Webb while 46% favored Allen. Anoher 4% were undecided. Source: Bob Lewis. "New CNN Poll Shows Webb With Slight Edge on Allen." Daily Press. October 30, 2006. Article Text

Unreconstructed Confederate

Allen wore a Confederate flag pin on his lapel in his 1970 graduation picture from a California high school (a place with no virtualy Confederate Heritage): Picture.

In an interview with The Daily Cavalier, Edward Sabournie, a former football player, revealed that Allen often used the "n_____" word in reference to Blacks and the "w_______" to refer to Latinos. See Interview. Another fellow University student and teammate of Allen told The Cavalier Daily in an interview that Allen enjoyed struting around the University of Virginia's Newcomb Hall spitting tobacco juice on the floors and walls.

As an attorney Allen hung a noose from a ficus tree in his Charlottesville law offices in the 1980s and displayed a Confederate flag inside his home. In his first election as a candidate in 1979 he ran a radio spot decrying a congressional redistricting plan whose main purpose was to elect Virginia's first post-Reconstruction Black congressman.

In 1996, then Governor Allen attended the Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual gathering of conservative movement organizations. There he agreed to pose for a group photo that included Gordon Lee Baumm, the founder of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) and former White Citizens Council organzer. National Rifle Association spokesman and actor Charlton Heston. The incriminating photo appeared in the Summer 1996 issue of the CCC's newsletter, the Citizens Informer.

He also played a Confederate General in the 2003 Civil War film Gods and Generals'. While Governor proposed Virginia state educational guidelines that would have referred to slaves as "settlers."

Corporate Ethics Violations

According to AP News, Allen failed to tell Congress about stock options he got for his work as a director of a high-tech company over the last five years. Allen also apears to have asked the Army to help another business that gave him similar options. The companies were Commonwealth Biotechnologies and Xybernaut, both of which had large government contracts. Although Allen has claimed that these options were worthless, they were actually worth more than $1 million. Source: Michael Forsythe and Miles Weiss. Personal Wrongdoing

"Ever since my brother George held me over the railing at Niagara Falls, I've had a fear of heights." [Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach's Daughter, page 43]

"We all obeyed George. If we didn't, we knew he would kill us. Once, when Bruce refused to go to bed, George hurled him through a sliding glass door. Another time, when Gregory refused to go to bed, George tackled him and broke his collarbone. Another time, when I refused to go to bed, George dragged me up the stairs by my hair." Political Thuggery

On October 31, 2006 Allen's staffers attacked University of Virginia law student, political blogger and constituent Mark Stark at a rally when he dared to question Allen about his divorce. See the Daily Reel Video. North Carolina Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole, who was at the rally to suport Allen, issued a statement that apeared to blame the campaign of Allen's Democratic opponent James Webb. Taking responsibility is counter-instinctive for Republicans.

2008

In 2008 he was a feature speaker at the CPAC rally for McCain.
