Garry Mauro

From dKosopedia

Garry Mauro was born February 21, 1948. A football star in high school, Mauro worked his way through college at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After college, Mauro attended The University of Texas Law School. After graduating from law school, Mauro went to work for United States Senator Ralph Yarborough. Mauro moved quickly up the political ladder. By the time he was 30, he was Executive Director of the Texas Democratic State Party. He also met two people who would become very close friends over the years while working as the Youth for McGovern coordinator in Texas: Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham. In 1982, Mauro was elected Texas State Land Commissioner, a statwide elected office. At the age of 34, Mauro was one of the youngest statewide elected officials in Texas state history. Despite extremely well financed challenges in 1986, 1990 and 1994, Mauro won re-election. In 1998, Mauro decided to challenge Governor George W. Bush. Mauro ran a solid campaign, but came up short, garnering only 32% of the vote. In 1992 and 1996, Mauro was the state chairman for Clinton-Gore, and in 2000, the state co-chairman for Gore-Lieberman. In the 2004 primaries, he was the state chairman for Dick Gephardt. There are rumors that he may run for statewide office in Texas again, possibly for the United States Senate or another run for Governor.
