Elected in 1986 he has served as a member of the House Energy and Commerce committee, its subcommittee on Health, it's subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, and the chairman of the subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet.

Upton, son of Stephen Upton, the founder of Whirlpool, is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he recieved a BA in Journalism in 1975. He and his wife, Amey, live in St. Joseph, MI with their two children, Meg and Stephen.

Congressman Upton supports a partial-birth abortion ban, a balanced budget amendment, privatization of Social Security, NAFTA and prayer in schools, and opposes affirmative action.

Interestingly enough he said "The U.S. should take military action against Iraq only as part of an international effort." on a 1998 National Congressional Political Awarness Test, but as of the beginning of this year supported the current (2003-) war in Iraq.

President Bush referrs to Upton as "Freddo".
