Biography

He was born born near Birán in the Oriente Province (today's Holguín Province), the third child of an immigrant planter from Galego, Spain on August 13, 1926. After years as a university student radical, radical lawyer and political exile in Mexico, he retuned to fight a guerrilla war took power from the corrupt regime of U.S. supported Fulgencio Batista at the head of the 26th of July Movement in early 1959. After a year of fighting Castro's guerrilla army marched into Havana to the cheers of working class Cubans and on January 8 Castro assumed the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Then on February 16, 1959, he was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba.

According to Georgie Anne Geyer (1991), one of Castro's first and most quoted biographers, the dominating factor in Castro’s life is hatred for the United States, a claim confirmed by his first wife and others (Raffy, 2003). His antipathy toward America can be traced in significant part to his childhood. Castro is the illegitimate child of Angel Castro (1875-1956), an illiterate Spaniard from Galicia, Spain. (Fuentes, 2004).

One of Castro’s most prized possessions is a 12-volume set of Mussolini’s speeches and writings (Pardo Llada, 1976).

The existance of a Communist state close to the border of the United States resulted in significant tension between the two countries like several attempts by the United States to remove him through assassination, a failed invasion known as the Bay of Pigs, and an economic embargo. Castro on the other hand continued a hostile tone against the United States, tried to install nuclear weapons targetted at the United States, and dumping his criminals as exiles in an event known as the Freedom Flotilla [2]. The relationship is still hostile and Cuba is still subject to an embargo.
