Elizabeth Dole is a former Republican Senator from North Carolina. She was elected to the Senate in 2002, and defeated by Kay Hagan in 2008.
Dole served on the Federal Trade Commission from 1973-1979, and she was an assistant to President Reagan from 1981-1983. She was the Secretary of Transportation from 1983-1987, then she was the Secretary of Labor from 1989-1991. From 1991-1999 she was the President of the American Red Cross.
She campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000.
A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Elizabeth Dole graduated with distinction from Duke University in 1958 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a degree from Harvard Law School in 1965 and also holds a master’s degree in education and government from Harvard.
Dole was also the chairwoman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee for the 2005-2006 election cycle. Her husband is former Kansas Senator Bob Dole.
She had hip replacement surgery in December 2006.
