Echo Chamber
A term to describe how rumor and gossip become headline news by starting a story with an unreliable (or mendacious) source, and having it echoed by increasingly legitimate sources. For Example: Newsmax or Drudge post a salacious story about an intern scandal, it then goes to Rush and Hannity, then to Faux News and the Washington Times, then gets picked up by MSNBC and WSJ, and finally the echo is so loud that NYT, WaPo, and the networks are forced to acknowledge it.)
