Department of Energy

The United States Department of Energy was created by president Jimmy Carter with dual responsibilities: to take over the old nuclear weapons development and nuclear energy responsibilities of the Atomic Energy Commission (itself the successor to the Manhattan project), and to take on major research and development efforts in domestic energy in the wake of the oil crises of the 1970s. Nuclear-related work unfortunately still occupies by far the largest fraction of the department's $22 billion budget.
