David Gill

David Gill is an Emergency Room physician and longtime member of Physicians for a National Health Program, and has previously served as President of the Board of Directors of his local hospital in Clinton, Illinois, Illinois. With no background in electoral politics, but recognizing the urgency with which the financing of health care in America requires reform, Dr. Gill struck out as a true "nobody" in early 2003 and began his campaign for a seat in the U.S. House (IL-15).

The learning curve was mighty steep at times, but Dr. Gill's message of our need for a Single-Payer Program resonated with many people, and resulted in the growth of a true grassroots campaign, with nearly a thousand small donors, and with hundreds of volunteers pitching in to help. Ultimately, Dr. Gill received 39% of the vote; however, in the areas where he was best able to use his limited funding, he succeeded: he defeated Tim Johnson by 10 points in the largest city in the District (Champaign), and he beat Mr. Johnson by more than 2-to-1 in Mr. Johnson's hometown of Urbana.
