Charlie Melancon (D) represents Louisiana's Third District in the U.S. House. He first won this seat in 2004 by defeating Billy Tauzin III, the son of a popular incumbent Republican Congressman. His margin of victory was 569 votes.

Background
Congressman Melancon is a lifelong resident of Assumption Parish, Louisiana, in the center of the 3rd congressional district, and he is a graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He is a former president of the American Sugar Cane League, and has owned several small businisses.
Charlie was elected to the Louisiana Legislature in 1987 in a special election. While serving the the state legislature, he authored legislation which set up the Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation.
Charlie has been married for 32 years to the former Peachy Clark and they are the parents of two children, Seph and Claire. Their daughter-in-law is Cheraine Blanchard Melancon.
