Cecil Heftel

Cecil Heftel, (September 30, 1924 – February 5, 2010), a Democrat, was Hawaii's Congressperson serving the 1st Congressional District from his election in 1976 until his resignation in July 1986. Heftel resigned to run, unsuccessfully, for Governor of the state of Hawaii.

Heftel was elected to the Hawaii State Board of Education in 2004, as one of the six Oahu At-Large members.

Heftel earned his living in the radio and television industries, and was one of Honolulu's most successful broadcasters, owning the KGMB television and radio stations in the 1960s and 70s.

Born in Chicago, Cook County, Ill., September 30, 1924, Heftel attended the public schools of Chicago, Ill. Heftel earned his B.S. from Arizona State University, Tempe, in 1951 and did graduate work at University of Utah and New York University.

Heftel died on February 4, 2010, at age 85, from natural causes in San Diego, California.
