War in Iraq

On August 3, Levin elicited a prediction of success in the Iraqi Quagmire from Gen. General John Abizaid in the following exchange:

LEVIN: Now, that phrase is reminiscent of Vice President Cheney's claim a year ago that the insurgency was in its last throes. General Abizaid, does our intelligence on the insurgency provide any basis for the assertion that the recent surge in violence represents the last arrows in the insurgents' quivers?

ABIZAID: Well, Senator Levin, I think it's clear that the insurgency has a lot of resiliency, it's probably going to last for some time even after U.S. forces depart and hand over security control completely to the Iraqis. The question is for President Talabani, as I've discussed with him before, whether or not over time the Iraqis can control it. And I believe they will be able to.

Background

Levin was born in Detroit in 1934. He graduated with honors from Swarthmore College in 1956 and from Harvard University Law School in 1959. He practiced and taught law in Michigan until 1964 when he was appointed an assistant attorney-general of Michigan and the first general counsel for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. He helped to establish the Detroit Public Defender's Office and led the Appellate Division of that office, which has become the State Appellate Defender's Office.

In 1969 Levin won election to the Detroit City Council and in 1973 became Council President by winning the most votes citywide. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 and was reelected in 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002.
