This special election was held to fill the seat of U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos (D), who passed away on Feb. 11, 2008. California's 12th district is safely Democratic. The election was held on April 8, 2008.

Jackie Speier (D) won 78% of the vote against a field of five candidates.
