At 12:17 p.m. on February 26, 1993, Al Qaeda bombed World Trade Center Tower 1. More information
On August 6, 2001, Bush received a memo: 8/06/01_Memo Some things mentioned in the memo, whose length is barely more than a page:
- Title: Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.
- Bin Laden implied in U.S. television interviews in 1997 and 1998 that his followers would follow the example of World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Yousef and "bring the fighting to America."
- Some of the more sensational threat reporting has not been corroborated, such as that from a ---- service in 1998 saying that Bin Laden wanted to hijack a U.S. aircraft to gain the release of "Blind Sheikh" Omar Abdel Rahman and other U.S.-held extremists
- Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.
The only successful foreign terrorist attack on US soil in a very long time was the February 26, 1993 bombing of World Trade Center Tower 1 by Al Qaeda. On September 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m., World Trade Center Tower 1 was again attacked by Al Qaeda, with much greater loss of life and property, and this, together with further attacks on the World Trade Center and on the Pentagon, was seen to be the beginning of a new era.
