Brian M. Higgins

Brian M. Higgins is the freshman Democratic U.S. Representative for New York's 27th District NY-27. In 2004, he won an open seat that had been held by Republican Representative Jack Quinn.
Higgins has stoically endured hysterical verbal attacks by Right to Life fanatics who claim to speak for God on the stem-cell issue. Higgins was compelled to leave during Mass to avoid a verbal onslaught from one Deacon Tom McDonnell.

Background
Congressman Higgins was born on October 6, 1959 and raised in Buffalo, New York where he currently resides with his wife, Mary Jane – a special education teacher - and their children Maeve and John. Higgins is a Roman Catholic.
2004 Election
A former member of the Buffalo City Council from 1987 to 1993 and a Member of the New York State Assembly from 1998 to 2004, Higgins bested a strong field of Democrats in the Democratic Party Primary to defeat popular Republican Erie County Comptroller Nancy Naples in the 2004 general election in a close race for the open seat. Higgins took 51% of the vote.

New York’s 27th District includes most of Erie County and all of Chautauqua County, including roughly two-thirds of the city of Buffalo.
