Largest of the Latin American countries. After several years of the presidency of the charismatic 'Lula', Brazil voted in 2010 for it's first woman president. Brazil, along with Bolivia Ecuador and most 'notoriously' Venezuela has moved towards a left-leaning democracy in recent years, a far cry from the swathe of brutal US-supported dictatorships of the 1970s. Some commentators attribute this phenomenon to the USA's preoccupation with matters Asian in it's adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq: it took its 'eye off the ball'.
