Robert P. Casey Jr. is a Democrat and junior Senator from Pennsylvania, and the son of former governor, Bob Casey. He was sworn in as the State Treasurer of Pennsylvania on January 18, 2005.

Contents

Background

Casey was the Auditor General of Pennsylvania from 1997 - 2005. He lost the 2002 Democratic primary for governor to Ed Rendell, and was running for the U.S Senate seat held by Rick Santorum, who was up for reelection in 2006. Casey Jr. faces token Democratic primary opposition from Chuck Pennacchio, a University of Arts History professor, and Lawyer Alan Sandals.

After winning the primary, Casey maintained a large lead over then-incumbent Rick Santorum throughout the summer and fall, going on to defeat Santorum 59-41%. This gave Santorum the dubious distinction of being the worst-defeated Republican incumbent Senator that year.
