Pope Benedict XVI or Benedictus PP. XVI is the 265th Roman Catholic Pope, not counting various pretenders to the throne. He succeeded John Paul II, who died at the beginning of April 2005, being elected on April 19, 2005 in a papal conclave, celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005, and took possession of his cathedral, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, on May 7, 2005.
Benedict XVI was bornJoseph Alois Ratzinger' on April 16, 1927 in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, Germany. Controversy surrounds this conservative pontiff's membership in the Hitler Youth during the Second World War. Pope Benedict XVI has both German and Vatican citizenship.
On May 9, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI endorsed excommunication as a punioshment for elected officials who voted for Mexico City's decision to legalize abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy: "It's nothing new, it's normal," he said.
