The 17th President of the United States from 1865-1869, Andrew Johnson assumed the office upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A Jacksonian states-rights Democrat from Tennessee, Johnson was the first president to face an impeachment trial in the Senate and is the only former President to serve in the Senate after his term in the White House.
