Alfred Packer

Alfred Packer a.k.a. Alford Packer was the infamous late 19th century convicted Cannibal and Republican in Colorado. Packer was an incompetent guide for 5 prospectors who died in the mountains in Winter 1874. Packer was originally jailed in Saguache, later escaped to Wyoming, lived under for 9 years an assumed name until his re-capture, and then returned to Lake City in 1883 for trial. The verdict was guilty, and he was sentenced to death by hanging. Judge Melville B. Gerry pronounced sentence saying, "...There was siven Dimmycrats in Hinsdale County! But you, yah voracious, main-eatin son of a bitch, yah et five of them, therefor I sentence ye T' be hanged by the neck until y're dead, dead, dead!"
